Dehradun: The Uttarakhand Assembly passed the Uniform Civil Code Bill on Wednesday, making Uttarakhand the first state in the country to implement the Uniform Civil Code. Despite opposition demands to refer the bill to a select committee, it was approved.
Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami assured the assembly that the bill was drafted in accordance with the Constitution. He emphasized that Article 44 grants states the right to introduce the UCC, ensuring equality without discrimination in matters like marriage, maintenance, inheritance, and divorce.
Dhami highlighted the UCC's benefits, especially its role in removing discrimination against women and addressing injustices. He called for an end to atrocities against women, emphasizing the need for equal rights for all.
