Widespread water wastage plagues Bhatkal as burst pipes drain thousands of liters daily

Bhatkal: The prolonged absence of rainfall in Karnataka, including Bhatkal, has led to a significant water shortage in rivers and dams. Unfortunately, over the past few months, substantial amounts of water have been wasted due to burst pipes in various areas under Bhatkal's municipal limits.

In Bunder Road, opposite Eidgah, a considerable volume of water has been wasted over the last four months. Similarly, Alva Street has experienced a daily loss of hundreds of liters for approximately 25 days, while near Lowna Complex adjacent to the highway, the wastage has been occurring for four days.

Despite residents' continuous complaints, it appears that municipal authorities are overlooking the issue rather than taking immediate action to repair the pipes and prevent the loss of valuable water.

Residents of Bunder Road express frustration, stating that despite the pipe in front of Eidgah bursting four to five months ago, no efforts have been made to address the issue. Consequently, hundreds of liters of water continue to flow onto the road daily.

Alva Street residents have been alerting municipal authorities for the past 25 days about insufficient water force in the taps supplied by the municipality. However, instead of addressing the public complaints and investigating the matter, municipal authorities insist that the water supply is flawless. It was only revealed when the UGD chamber was opened for a house connection that the cement pipe carrying drinking water was damaged, causing hundreds of liters to leak into the UGD chamber.

Local residents note that the road was excavated about two months ago for the construction of a new concrete road, suspecting that the pipe may have broken during that time or during the construction of the new chamber around 25 days ago.

It's worth noting that water is supplied by the municipality for one hour every day between 7 AM to 8 AM. Based on this schedule, hundreds of liters of water have been wasted from the Alva Street pipe alone over the last month. With the UGD chamber now open, the same water is flowing onto the road.

It remains uncertain how many more thousands of liters of water will be lost before municipal authorities address these pipe issues, prompting potential intervention from either the Bhatkal taluka administration or the Uttara Kannada district administration to stem further water wastage.
