In a historic turn of events, Syrian rebels have reached an agreement with outgoing Prime Minister Mohammed Ghazi Jalali to transfer power to the rebel-led Salvation Government. The agreement marks a significant milestone in Syria’s 13-year civil war, which followed over five decades of Assad family rule.

The power transfer comes in the wake of President Bashar al-Assad's removal, raising cautious hope among Syrian refugees scattered worldwide about the possibility of stability returning to their homeland.

Rebel leaders, including Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) chief Abu Mohammad al-Jolani and Salvation Government Prime Minister Mohammed al-Bashir, held discussions with Jalali to finalize the process. In a statement reported by CNN, the rebels expressed their commitment to "ensuring the provision of essential services to our people during the transition."

While Damascus began showing signs of tentative normalcy on Monday, with some traffic resuming and people venturing out, the majority of businesses remained closed. However, uncertainty around the country’s stability has already impacted global oil prices, causing a 1% increase despite Syria’s limited oil production capacity.

"We fought for a purpose, and now that it’s achieved, we want the state and security forces to lead," said Firdous Omar, a farmer and long-time rebel from Idlib, in a Reuters interview.

Prime Minister Jalali, speaking to Al Arabiya TV, indicated that the transition could take several days to complete. HTS leader Jolani has also met Vice President Faisal Mekdad to discuss forming a transitional government, pledging to rebuild Syria in the aftermath of years of destruction.

The situation remains fluid, but the agreement represents a crucial step toward establishing a new political framework in war-torn Syria.
