Karwar: Following heavy rain and winds, sea erosion has been noticed at Ravindranath Tagore beach in the city. Sea erosion is an annual problem during monsoon on the beach near Hanuman statue.
To facilitate visitors here, shelters are constructed. With sea erosion, their bases are losing strength. If the erosion continues, the volleyball round and the parking area near Hanuman statue will be washed out in one or two years, according to locals.
To put an end to the erosion problem, the district administration had planned to construct a seawall.
When the work began, some fishermen and former minister Anand Asnotikar opposed the work saying it is a violation of the coastal regulation zone (CRZ) rules and also it will affect traditional fishing. The district administration had planned to construct a 48 metre-long seawall at a cost of Rs 14.4lakh.
When fishermen staged protests before state assembly elections, the administration stopped the work.
Now sea erosion again seen in the area posing threats to visitors. Everyday, hundreds of people visit the beach for morning and evening walks.
If the erosion continues, it will affect routine activities of many people, they said.
They also urged the authorities to find temporary or permanent solution to the problem without harming the natural beauty of the beach.
