Seabird evacuees seek early settlement of compensation

Karwar: Seabird Naval Base Evacuees Forum has urged Deputy Commisisoner to verify and pay compensation to all those displaced by Seabird Naval Base project and are yet to receive it.

Forum office-bearers submitted a memorandum in this regard to Additional Deputy Commissioner Suresh Itnal, in Karwar, on Tuesday.

According to the memorandum out of those displaced, those categorised as ‘28A case’, were not paid compensation, and has urged the administration to look into this and pay the compensation where-ever due. “The new applications received under ‘28A’ should be taken up. More than 500 applications submitted under this rule had been rejected, and amount paid to them on compassionate grounds. However, land belonging to these applicants are already with the Navy, hence, compensation should be paid for land too. Though authorities had been approached several times no action has been taken,” the memorandum said.

Stating government was deducting 20% as TDS which was against Supreme Court order they demanded that this should be stopped immediately. They also demanded that TDS deducted earlier should be refunded.
