Shilpavana on banks of Arabian Sea set to be a tourists delight

Karwar (DHNS): Shilpavana, being constructed on the banks of Arabian Sea, in Karwar, will be ready for inauguration in 15 days, Additional Deputy Commissioner H Prasanna, said.

Speaking to reporters, he said, artistes who are constructing the Shilpavana, are giving final touches to the sculptures. They sought time for completing the work. As a result, inauguration has been postponed, he added.

Shilpavana, which is adjacent to old port tower of Naval force, has been carved into an oval shape and protected by fence. Sanding at the edge of Shilpavana one can see five islands in the Arabian Ocean, movement of ships and fishing activities of fishermen, he said.

The park has already been laid with grass lawns and seating arrangements have been made for visitors.

Amusement park

The park designers have made sure that on six acres of land, in which three acres has Shilpavana and in another three acres amusement park, has artificial waterfall and other attraction.

A visitor at the park will get a peek into the life, culture and tradition of Uttara Kannada district. One can get a feel of life of tribes of this region including Siddis, Kunabis, Halakki Vokkaligas and Gowlis.

“A visitor can spend nearly half of his day at the park easily,” he said.

Mohan Sona, artist, in-charge of Shilpavana said, Yakshagana, which is one of main art forms of the district, has been carved at the park and highlights of Yakshagana sculpture is the depiction of Mantapa Upadhya’s female character.

M G Kajji, in-charge of amusement park, said for recreation purposes of visitors, they have prepared a miniature suspension bridge and monkey bridge. Tree houses have been created on trees within the park, he said.

Prasanna said the park needs Rs 4 crore more to develop it to original plan. The district administration has written to Tourism Department to sanction more grants. Tourism Department has so far sanctioned Rs 75 lakh. And Ideal Road Builders (IRB), under its Social Corporate Responsibality has released Rs 61 lakh.

It is IRB, which has supplied boulders for the park to carve idols.
