Karwar: Six family members tragically drowned while trying to save a young girl in the Kali River. The incident occurred on Sunday evening near the village of Akoda in Joida taluk, approximately 80 km from Karwar.

Sources indicate that a group from Ishwar Nagar in Hubli, along with family members from Bangalore, had gathered at the Kali River in Akoda for a summer picnic. While playing near the riverbank, a girl fell into the water and began to drown. In a desperate attempt to save her, five other family members entered the water one by one and tragically drowned.

The family, originally from Bangalore, had planned to meet relatives from Hubli in Joida taluka near Dandeli for a picnic. What was meant to be a joyous gathering turned fatal, casting a shadow of mourning over the family.

The victims have been identified as Nazir Ahmed Chaman Saab (40), a resident of Hubli, his daughters Alfia (10) and Moheen (6), Nazir's sister Reshma Tawfiq Ahmed (38), and her children Ifra Ahmed (15) and Abid Ahmed (12). Two female family members who did not enter the river survived the ordeal.

Following the tragedy, Dandeli rural police, assisted by locals, recovered all six bodies. The bodies were sent to Dandeli General Government Hospital for post-mortem examinations. Dandeli Rural Police Station has registered a case regarding the incident.
