Siddapur (DHNS): A mini garden, developed by the Town Panchayat near Nehru Ground, is waiting for the children to explore it.

The garden is open every day from 4 pm to 8 pm. The garden has been developed on a 30 acre plot with slides, swings, and other paraphernalia have been installed. Benches too have been placed to enable people to sit, and a walking path has been created for walkers. The garden contains a well and a toilet, and three large trees which provide adequate shade and protection from scorching sun and other elements. The panchayat has been developing the garden since past three to four years in a phased manner.

The Nehru Ground located adjacent to the garden has a historic background. The then prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru had attended a programme here in 1956. The programme was organised under the leadership of Congress leader Govind Shanbagh.

The book ‘Freedom Fighter Govind Shanbhag’ mentions that the stage and the platform for Nehru programme was constructed by Shanbhag.

The ground, which was until then referred to as Hudadi Ground, started to be referred to as Nehru Ground after the former prime minister’s visit.

Nehru Ground is a beehive of activities which include games like cricket, cultural programmes like Yakshagana, hosting dramas, public meetings, and other socio political and cultural programmes.
