Udupi: Two labourers were buried under a pile of mud here at Kaup as a tragedy occurred while they were digging the road to lay pipelines and manhole on 27th February, Tuesday.

The deceased have been identified as Dasappa (49yrs) and Umesh (41yrs). Both were contract labourers from Chitradurga.

According to sources, Dasappa and Umesh were working on the project undertaken by Deviprasad Constructions and released by Karnataka Water Supply and Drainage Board, to lay pipelines and manhole at Kaup here.

During the work, the duo that were standing on either side of the hole dug to lay pipelines, fell into it after losing balance as the pile of loose mud disintegrated due to the movement of heavy vehicles. After falling, they got buried under the mud.

Even though the people immediately put in efforts to save them, they failed. The people were able to bring the duo out after 30 minutes of consistent efforts and rushed them to the hospital. However, they were declared brought dead by the doctors.

It has been alleged that the incident occurred due to negligence of contractors as no safety precautions were taken at the spot.

A case has been registered and Kaup police are conducting investigations alongside Additional police commissioner Kumarchandra.
