Dubai: The UAE Government announced on Friday a new federal decree law on traffic regulations, set to take effect on March 29, 2025. According to Khaleej Times, a leading English daily published in Dubai, the decree includes significant updates aimed at enhancing road safety and adapting to evolving transportation technologies.

Per an advisory from the UAE Government Media Office, the new law lowers the minimum age for driving to 17, allowing individuals to obtain a driver’s license earlier than before.

The regulations also impose stricter rules on noise levels, prohibiting loud vehicles and restricting the use of car horns within cities, except to prevent danger or accidents. The updated traffic code further prohibits pedestrians from crossing roads with speed limits over 80 kilometers per hour, with violators facing potential civil or criminal liability.

The law introduces “deterrent penalties” for serious offenses such as driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, hit-and-run incidents, jaywalking, and driving in flood-prone areas during heavy rain. Transportation of hazardous materials or abnormal loads will now require a permit from the relevant authority.

In line with global advancements, the new decree also includes provisions for self-driving and electric vehicles, detailing procedures for inspection, registration, licensing, and trials for new vehicle technologies. According to the government, these amendments aim to "keep up with the rapid evolution of transportation worldwide."
