Mangaluru: MLA U T Khader condemned the assault on two medical students belonging to different communities near NITK toll gate in Surathkal and urged home minister to ensure that stern action was taken against anti-social elements.

Khader told media persons at Circuit House on Wednesday that the anti-social elements had sullied the image of district and parents from outside the state were hesitating to send their children to educational institutions in the district.

"In connection with the incident which took place in Surathkal, the accused had come out on station bail on the same evening. It is quite evident that police succumbed to political pressure of the ruling party," he said.

"In the video clips, that went viral on social media, police are seen requesting the accused not to beat the students. If police themselves behave in a helpless manner and do not use their cane against wrongdoers, the anti-social elements will surely take undue advantage. The acts of creating unrest in society should not be tolerated," he stressed.

Khader said he will bring the incident to notice of chief minister, home minister and demand action. He also sought an inquiry into the case related to the distribution of pamphlets on caste conversion in Someshwara.

Leaders Sadashiva Ullal, Santhosh Kumar Shetty and Murali were present.
