Bhatkal: VAOs resume indefinite strike over unmet demands

Bhatkal: The Village Administrative Officers (VAOs) of Bhatkal Taluk staged an indefinite strike, near old Tahsildar's office, protesting against the state government for failing to fulfill the assurances given during their previous protest in September 2024. The officers wore black badges to express their dissatisfaction and reiterated their key demands.

The VAOs highlighted several fundamental issues affecting their work, particularly difficulties arising from mobile applications and web-based software implemented by the department. They stated that over 17 mobile and web applications are being used for official duties, increasing workload without providing necessary infrastructure. The officers demanded well-equipped offices, high-quality tables and chairs, mobile devices, laptops, internet access, printers, scanners, and Google Chromebooks to effectively manage their responsibilities.

Another major concern raised was the withdrawal of KCSR Rule 15A (2) by the Revenue Department, which has hindered promotions and transfers for the past four years, causing uncertainty among employees. The protestors urged the government to either reinstate this rule or establish a clear transfer policy similar to other departments.

Additionally, the officers opposed the e-Pauti Khata movement, which mandates updating property records for deceased landowners without requiring heirship and death certificates. They argued that this process could lead to complications and demanded its immediate withdrawal.

The first phase of the indefinite protest was held on September 26, 2024, and was withdrawn on October 3, 2024, after receiving government assurances. However, since none of the promises were fulfilled, the Karnataka State Village Administrative Officers’ Association decided to resume the agitation.

Several government officials and union representatives visited the protest site to show solidarity. M.N. Naik, President of the Bhatkal Government Employees' Association, expressed his support for the protesting officers. Others present at the protest included Taluk Association President Latha Naik, along with Charan Gowda, Ganesh Kulal, Veena Naik, Tippanna, Vijeth, Divya, Vinutha, Beemanna, Shabana Banu, Deekshith, Sunil, Deepti, Veena, Aishwarya, and Ashwini.

The protest is expected to continue until the government addresses their demands.
