Bhatkal: Old Photos of Animal Remains Resurface on Social Media, Spark Tensions

Bhatkal: Photos showing animal bones and carcasses went viral on social media on Thursday, raising questions over whether attempts were being made to disturb the peace in Bhatkal. The viral messages claimed that a large number of bones were found in the Makhdoom Colony area and alleged that mass slaughtering of cattle had taken place over the past two days. The reports quickly spread to some media outlets, making it a subject of debate at the state level.

However, it was later revealed that the images were nearly 12 to 13 years old. Locals alleged that miscreants were circulating the old photos with the intention of spreading hatred against a particular community in Bhatkal.

Police and municipal officials clarified that the viral images appeared to be outdated and that no such remains were found during inspection of the alleged site. Bhatkal Town Municipal Chief Officer Venkatesh Naouda confirmed that he and his team visited the spot immediately after receiving information but found no traces of bones. He further noted that the images showed stagnant rainwater, even though the town had not received rainfall for the past two to three days, clearly indicating that the photos were old.

Following the circulation of videos and images, members of Sangh Parivar groups approached the local police station, accusing the authorities of overlooking large-scale illegal slaughtering. Police subsequently launched an inquiry into the matter.

Residents of Makhdoom Colony said that peace has prevailed in Bhatkal in recent days, but after earlier attempts to stir unrest over the Old Fish Market issue failed, some elements are now resorting to circulating old images in order to fuel discord between communities and spread fear in the town. They urged the public not to believe in rumors and to remain vigilant. They also called on law enforcement agencies to take strict action against those spreading hatred through such means.

Concerns have also been raised over the lack of firm action against individuals circulating misleading content on social media. Locals fear that unchecked attempts to create communal tension could have serious repercussions in the future.
