Karwar: Members of Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) will take out a massive protest in Bengaluru on 14th September, against anti-labour policies of the Centre and the State governments. They will also demand for fulfilling of their various demands.

Briefing reporters here, on Friday, CITU District unit General Secretary C R Shanbag said, in January this year the members of CITU had staged three days day-and-night protest demanding increasing of minimum wages to Rs 18,000.

It was after the intervention of labour minister, department’s principal secretary and assurance from chief minister that the workers withdrew their protest. However, instead of fulfilling their demands the State government has not taken a single step in this regard.

He said more than 2.5 lakh workers from across the State will participate in the protest rally and nearly 14,000 workers of district will join hands to strengthen the force of CITU at Bengaluru. “Hundreds of labourers are working in factories across the State, they are also working as contract workers both in private firms and State government departments,” he said and added that Union government in its Seventh pay commission has recommended implementation of minimum salary of Rs 18,000 per month. This new salary should be implemented across the country, on the lines of Delhi, he said.

He said in State, nearly 60% of private workers are working on contract basis, while 40% of government should implement the Supreme Court verdict of October 16, 2016 of equal pay for equal work without tweaking anything.

Shanbag said, both Tamil Nadu and Assam governments have amended rules to implement the apex court orders in this regard. And similar changes should be made in Karnataka also, he said.
