Mangaluru: Deputy Leader of the Congress Legislature Party and Mangalore MLA U T Khader condemned the action of Government PU College in Kundapura for denying permission to students wearing a Hijab (headscarf).

He alleged that the college authorities had succumbed to pressure and denied permission to students.

Khader said that he had discussed the issue with the Udupi deputy commissioner and he had favoured the old system of allowing headscarves inside the classroom.

Describing it as a sensitive issue, Khader said the government had failed to take a clear stand on the issue.

The government’s silence makes one wonder about the motive behind the move. In the interest of education, college authorities should continue the old system of allowing students to wear headscarves, he added.

Khader said that he had discussed the issue with Mangalore University vice chancellor and promised to hold a discussion with the minister for primary and secondary education.
