Karwar: Following allegations that copying was going on during exams at Majali Engineering College here, a few media persons went to the college to report the truth. However, Vice-principal Lavanya Hegde came down heavily on the journalists and even registered a complaint against them.

Exams of third, fifth and seventh semester engineering students were going on in the college. On Saturday also, written exams of various departments were held but there were allegations of copying. To report the matter, a few journalists approached the college. As the principal of the college was on a leave, vice-principal Lavanya Hegde was the in-charge and so, the media persons asked her about the problems being faced by the college and the copying issue. But Lavanya asked them why they had come to the college without prior intimation and said that she did not have the power to give any information in the absence of the principal. Following such a reply, the media persons returned.

However after the media persons returned, Lavanya called Chittakul police station and complained that media persons had barged into the college and had disturbed the exams. She filed a complaint against two reporters and a cameraman.

Meanwhile, it can be recalled that Lavanya was the coordinator of the class in the college where a major blunder had been reported recently. The first semester students were taught a ‘wrong’ subject and the mistake had come to light while the students were filling the exam form on December 29. Reports regarding this appeared in newspapers and it had come to the notice of VTU also.

Following the incident on Saturday, many people expressed suspicion that she must have filed a complaint against media persons to cover up her mistake.

Reacting to the incident, Superintendent of Police Vinayak Patil said that an investigation will be launched with regard to the complaint lodged and the truth will come to fore only after that.
