Karwar: Every rainy season, the residents of KHB Colony in Karwar used to face a tough time as rainwater used to stagnate on the roads in the colony up to the knee-level. To bid an adieu to this problem, the City Municipal Council is upgrading the main roads by raising their height and concreting over, under the third phase works of Nagarotthan Scheme.
The concrete laying work around Hari Om Circle has completed and now, the road stands around one foot above the ground level. Either side of this road is being levelled using mud.
Also, the work of concreting over the road connecting the Habbuwad main road through KDCC Bank near the State Pollution Control Board is in progress.
The CMC will soon take up the work of concreting the road between Golden Bakery and Garden coming under Ward No: 19, from the Banyan tree (Aalada Mara) on D 10 main road to Elim Centre, B 10 main road Heera Building to B 8 road and nearby areas.
Under the third phase of the Nagarotthan Scheme, Rs 16.43 crore has been earmarked for taking up road work in various areas. The work also includes construction of cement drainage and re-asphalt of few roads.
“We are happy that concrete roads are being laid at least now. We used to struggle to use these roads during monsoon season due to water stagnation. Asphalt roads would always turn pathetic due to lack of proper maintenance.
There have been many instances where people met with accidents due to bad roads with water”, said Sadanand, a resident of KHB Colony.
He said that just concreting over the roads was not enough. As the height of the roads has raised by around one feet, it is not possible for vehicles to move at the side when two huge vehicles block the road. This may also lead to accidents and more problems. So, the City Municipal Council must level the sides of these roads with mud.
The local people said that KHB Colony is a low-lying area when compared to other areas in the City. So, rainwater easily flows towards KHB Colony and gets collected there. Hence, steps should be taken to check water from entering the houses around the concrete road.
