Cyclone alert alarms at 29 places in Uttara Kannada district: DC

Karwar: Cyclone alert alarms are being installed at 29 places in Uttara Kannada district to make people aware of cyclones in advance, said Deputy Commissioner Mullai Muhilan.

Speaking to media persons here on Wednesday, he said, under National Cyclone Risk Mitigation Project, the Union Government is installing the cyclone alert alarms in the district. Control centres would be opened at the tahsildar offices in five taluks of the coastal region in the district. Repeaters would be installed at Guddalli in Karwar and Karikana Parameshwari Gudda in Honnavar, he informed.

He said, measures would be initiated to alert people about floods that may occur after water would be released from the dams of Kali and Sharavati rivers in the district.

Coordination would be maintained among the officials of Karnataka Power Corporation Limited and respective taluk administration to tackle the challenge, he added. 

He said, Karnataka Power Corporation Limited is identifying the danger zones in the river basins. To give prior intimation about the flood situation, mobile phone numbers of 2,800 people of 26 villages located on the banks of Kali river and more than 5,500 people’s mobile phone numbers of 54 villages situated on the banks of Sharavati and Gundabal rivers have been collected and they have been given to the Karnataka Power Corporation Limited, he informed.

He said, moreover, the phone numbers of local bodies and nodal officials who have been appointed to monitor the flood situation, have also been given to the Karnataka Power Corporation Limited which would send SMSs in advance to these phone numbers regarding water release, he stated.
