Darkness descends on Bhatkal's National Highway, posing grave risks for pedestrians

Bhatkal: Stretching approximately 4km from the heart of the city at Shamsuddin Circle to Ranginkatta, Nawayat Colony, Madina Colony, Venktapur, and on the other side Mood Bhatkal, Muglihonda, Sarpankatta, and Gorte, the National Highway remains devoid of lighting, shrouding the entire area in darkness.

As the sun sets, the absence of lights along the highway poses a significant risk for pedestrians navigating the roadside in the dark. This particularly endangers the lives of women and children walking along the highway during the night.

Previously, high-mast lighting towers were installed at Shamsuddin Circle and outside the KSRTC bus stand, illuminating the city. However, these lights have been missing for over a year, raising concerns among the local populace and causing inconvenience.

Locals emphasize that the darkness on the city's highway is so pervasive that officials from the taluka administration, councilors, panchayat members, and executives of local social organizations are unable to grasp the extent of the people's problems.

During heavy rains, water accumulation in certain highway sections prompted meetings, with highway officers, IRB officials, the DC, and ministers rushing to address the issue. However, the lights installed along the highway for about two and a half years are now missing. This darkness and the problems caused by it are not visible to the local leaders, which has led to surprise among the people.

Even during daylight, animals rest and roam freely on the highway amidst the crowd, making it challenging for people, especially two-wheeler riders, to avoid accidents. Struggling to evade animals during daylight often leads to accidents, resulting in injuries. However, hitting an animal on a two-wheeler in the dark of night could be fatal. People's representatives and members of social organizations should pay attention to this.

It's been learned that during the construction of the four-lane National Highway, all electric poles along the roadside were removed about two and a half years ago, and large towers were installed in their place. The plan was to install lights after completing the four-lane National Highway construction, but work on the highway in the middle of the city has halted, and there's uncertainty regarding when it will resume or conclude, leaving everyone with unanswered questions.

As the sun sets, pedestrians are forced to rely on the lights from heavy vehicles and shopfronts to navigate the roadside. However, crossing the highway in the dark of night while four-wheelers and heavy vehicles speed like a storm raises a critical concern. Is crossing the highway akin to inviting death? Local authorities, leaders, and members of social organizations must seek answers and take immediate action.
