Sirsi: Most teachers complain that mobile phones, computers, tablets and other gadgets affect the academic studies of students but here is a teacher who has developed a technology under which the students can engage in studying the school syllabus on their own and also evaluate themselves using these gadgets.

Assistant Teacher Satyanarayan Hegde of Ummachagi Government High School in Yellapur taluk has designed a technology called 'e-reflection' for SSLC students. The Department of State Educational Research and Training (DSERT) has appreciated this app by giving an award and has instructed the heads of the education department and District Institute for Education and Training (DIET) to use it in all educational districts in the State.

"We have to come out of our traditional 'talk' and 'chalk' culture and draw students towards academics by imparting lessons through technology. I came up with the idea of developing such an app four to five years back. I began experimenting with the methods to make the academic material interesting for my son at home. Those experiments gave a clear idea to me. Later, I repeated the experiments in the school and got a good response from the students", said Satyanarayan Hegde.

How to use app?

When the wps app is downloaded from the Google Play Store, the 'E-reflection' technology in Unicode can be easily used on mobile phones. This even works offline.

"There is a Whatsapp group of teachers from across the State and officers interested in knowing more about this technology. Self-evaluation material is available for English grammar, science, social studies and Kannada subjects. The material on all subjects can be prepared if the support and cooperation of subject teachers are obtained", he said.

SSLC student Monisha Nayar said that e-reflection helps in understanding their capabilities and areas which need improvement. "It increases our confidence and helps us in gaining more marks in examinations", she added.
