Elephants enter fields in Mundgod destroying Areca crops, plantation

Mundgod: Elephants on Thursday night entered the Mundgod destroying the crops in fields and plantations near Hanumapur coming under Katur forest limits in taluk.

The areca plantation owned by Manjunath Yallappa Angadi at Kallalli was raided by the herd of elephants have uprooted 10 to 12 areca plants and have also eaten and destroyed the paddy grown in the nearby field.

According to farmer Manjunath Andagi, at night they were expecting that the elephants might raid the fields. As their expectation, a calf and four adult elephants raided the paddy field. At midnight, they drove them back to the forest. But again in early morning, they have raided the field and have destroyed areca plants, which were around 12 years old”.

Andagi said that the forest officials had inspected the extent of loss in the field. The elephants are camping in the nearby forest area and can raid other fields at any moment.
