Dubai: The luxurious new office of Jan Brothers, a renowned company in Bhatkal's Nawayat community, was recently inaugurated on the 8th floor of the Gold Souq Metro Building. The company, founded in 1967 by the late Jan Abdul Qadir Basha, is a family-owned business of the Nawayat Community, now transitioning to the fourth generation within the same family. The company is currently led by highly educated young individuals from the third generation, with a promising fourth-generation member already having joined. The collective commitment of these young members aims to propel the company to new heights.
The roots of this family enterprise, initially named MM Jufri and Sons, trace back to its founding in the third decade of the twentieth century by the late Mohtisham Mohammed Jufri (MM Jufri) in Bahrain. In 1967, his sons Jan Abdul Qadir Basha and Jan Abdul Rehman established Jan Brothers in Dubai, while their other siblings continued the business in Bahrain. In 1984, Mr. Jan Abdul Rahman established Saibeen Complex in Mangalore. Following the passing of Mr. Jan Abdul Qadir Basha in 1992, his son, Mr. Jan Haroon Rasheed, assumed leadership in Dubai, guiding the company to significant success during his 36-year tenure as CEO.
Mr. Jan Haroon attributes the success of Jan Bros to the hard work of his late father and uncle in establishing the company. He mentions that Jan Bros commenced its journey in 1967 at Bar Dubai, initially focusing on retail and semi-wholesale trade in perfumes, cosmetics, suitcases, briefcases, and Moulinex Company products. The friendly relations maintained by his father and uncle with shipmen facilitated business growth, as people arriving in Dubai by water ship would frequent their shop.
The company later expanded to Deira Dubai, initiating wholesale trade in daily utilities. Jan Bros distinguished itself by prioritizing quality, introducing proprietary brands, and offering goods at competitive prices, fostering rapid business growth. Today, the company continues to supply a wide range of products to grocers, big malls, and retailers in Dubai and beyond.
Upon assuming leadership in 1992, Mr. Jan Haroon received robust support and guidance from his three uncles. Haroon highlights that one of his uncles, Jan Ismail, stayed in Dubai for approximately a year to provide hands-on guidance in running the business. Subsequently, one after the other, the children of his three uncles joined the business after completing their educational journeys.
Jan Bros, boasting ten showrooms across the Gulf, continues to be a prominent player with four showrooms in Dubai, three in Bahrain, two in Muscat, and one in Kuwait.
In Dubai, Jan Haroon Rasheed S/o Jan Basha oversees the Jan Groups, while his brother Jan Maktoum leads the Jan Groups. Managing the Dubai business are Jan Mohammed Siddique Mohtisham S/o Jan Abdul Rehman, Jan Abdul Azim S/o Jan Abdul Rahman, and Jan Fauzan S/o Jan Ismail. Jan Athar and Jan Akkaf, both sons of Jan Abdul Rahman, take charge of Jan Bros in Muscat. Overseeing the business in Bahrain is Jan Abdul Ghafar S/o late M M Jufri, along with his two sons, Jan Yahya and Jan Zia, while another son, Jan Raashid, handles operations in Kuwait.
The recent addition of Mr. Jan Haroon's son, Jan Nabeet Mohtisham, from the fourth generation underscores the continuity and growth of the family business by the late MM Jufri.
Notably, Mr. Jan Haroon Rasheed served as the CEO of Jan Groups from 1992 to 2017, succeeded by his brother Jan Maktoum.
Addressing the perception that other companies may have surpassed Jan Bros, Mr. Jan Haroon proudly states that the company has never borrowed money from banks. Despite a 50% decrease in the Dubai market, he attributes the company's resilience and success to Allah's blessings and expresses gratitude.
Jan Bros currently employs 82 staff in its four Dubai showrooms alone, with a total of around 160 employees across its ten Gulf showrooms. Over 60% of Jan Bros' workforce comprises Indians."
