Solve drinking water crisis in villages, says Mangalore MLA U T Khader

Mangaluru (TNN): Urging the authorities concerned to solve the drinking water crisis in rural areas of Dakshina Kannada, Mangalore MLA U T Khader alleged that no grants were sanctioned to constituency for the purpose.

He told reporters here on Friday that the district administration needs to clarify on the availability of funds to mitigate the drinking water crisis. “Borewells and open wells in rural areas are drying up, and people have been facing the water shortage crisis. If borewells or open wells could not be dug, then the authorities concerned should make necessary arrangements to supply water in tankers to parched areas. Also, the district administration should release a list of officials who can be contacted in case of water crisis,” Khader said, adding that people’s representatives are not in a position to take initiatives to supply drinking water to people since the model code of conduct (MCC) is in force.

Further, he also urged the officials not to remove banners and publicity materials of religious places in the name of MCC. “Teams that implement MCC have been removing all banners and posters of religious places in the name of MCC. However, officials have said that banners without names of political leaders and parties can be used for religious programmes. The district administration should provide information to the public regarding MCC,” he said.

On differences regarding the announcement of candidate for Sullia constituency, Khader said Congress high command will solve the issue amicably. “It is common that party workers will express their sentiments when their leaders are not given tickets. All ticket aspirants have eligibility, but the party can issue tickets to only one candidate. Many leaders from other political parties have expressed willingness to join Congress. However, tickets cannot be given to them for election as we have to protect the interests of our leaders and MLAs too,” he said.

‘Scrapping 4% Muslim quota hidden agenda’

Khader said that the scrapping of the 4% quota in reservation for Muslims was a hidden agenda of BJP. “The decision proves anti-reservation policy. Congress will fight legally against the government’s decision, which was taken without studying the pros and cons,” he added.
