Karwar: After an attack on hotel staffs and incidents of eve-teasing especially during night on Ravindranath Tagore beach in Karwar, Ravindranath Tagore Beach Conservation and Development Committee has appointed a gunman for security purpose.
Recently some drunk tourists, who were students of a polytechnic in Mandya, had thrashed 'Drive-In' hotel staff and vandalised the hotel on the beach, when they were asked to stop harassing women. Earlier, some miscreants used to drink and break bottles on the beach in the city. To put an end to the illegal activities, the committee has appointed an exserviceman as gunman along with night duty lifeguards at RT beach. And he will be working at night shift from September 1. Murdeshwar, Gokarna and Karwar are the main tourism destinations in the district. Hundreds of tourists visit these places every day.
Some tourists drink and cause trouble. Such incidents are common at Murdeshwar beach which is favorite tourists spot. The committee is also in search of ex-serviceman to work as a gunman at Murdeshwar and Gokarna beaches. Once they find one who is ready to work during night shifts, they will be appointed at these two beaches.
Speaking to media, additional deputy commissioner H Prasanna said for the security purpose, the committee has planned to appoint ex-servicemen as gunmen at three beaches in the district.
