Karwar: With fishermen netting huge haul of fish, since the last couple of days, prices of fish, which were ruling, have fallen by nearly 50 percent.
So much so, citizen are making the most of the price fall, making a beeline to the temporary fish market to buy the produce at half the rates and for a rich repast and gorge on their favourite delicacies.
Incidentally, trawlers and Persian boats have hit the sea since August 1, making a fair weather of it much ahead of fishing season. Traditional fishermen are bringing in large amount of Sigadis to the local markets. Motorised fishing has helped them to snare different varieties of fish in the deep sea.
With pescetarians busily losening their pursestrings on the rich spread of seafood in the market, fishermen on their part, are also making a kill. Sigadis, according to fishermen, are expected to abundantly available for further 15-20 days and good quality Sigadis exported outside the State for hand some profit. Hence, fishermen are betting on rapid fishing. Meanwhile, outside the temporary fish market, women are busy cleaning the fish catch. Customers pay from Rs 20 to Rs 30 to get fish cleaned.
“As prices of fish have fallen, I brought Bellanji, along with Sigadi. It helps me to cook delicious food for my guests, “Customer Vinod Naik effusively gushed at the opportunity.
“The Sigadi culture is being practised in Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu from where fishes are exported much to foreign countries. Hence, prices fallen down in local markets,”a fishermen pointed out.
