Gold worth Rs 91.35 lakh seized at Mangaluru airport

Mangaluru (PTI): The customs officers at the Mangaluru International Airport (MIA) have seized 1,625 gm of gold, valued at over Rs 91.35 lakh from passengers between February 1 and 15.

The seizure was made from five male passengers who arrived from Dubai and Bahrain, a Customs release here said.

The gold was smuggled through different modus operandi like concealment in the handle of trolley bag, in rectum, in oral cavity and in the form of thin paste layer pasted inside a carton box.

The officers also seized foreign currency notes worth 5,100 US dollars and 2,420 pounds, totally equivalent to Indian Rs 6,54,750 from a male passenger who was attempting to smuggle them out of India by Air India Express flight No IX 383 to Dubai.

Further investigation is in progress, the release said.
