Bhatkal: An elderly man was killed on the spot at Bhatkal Shirali NH 66 when a speedy car hit him and tried to flee from the scene.

It is said that Keshav Nagappa Shanbhag (77) was crossing the highway when a speedy car bearing Bangalore number plate, coming from Kumta, hit him and tried to escape, but locals alerted the police who put a barricade at the Sarpankatta check post and took the car into their custody.

The accident occurred at 8:30 pm, Tuesday.

It is said that Keshav was hailed from Kaiga, near Karwar, who with his wife was on visit to his brother's house in Shirali in order to celebrate the Dussehra festival.

The body was taken to Bhatkal government hospital for post mortem and a case has been registered at the Bhatkal rural police station.
