Karnataka Cabinet backs ₹8–10 hike in Nandini milk prices

Bengaluru: The Karnataka Cabinet on Tuesday favoured increasing the price of Nandini milk by Rs 8-10 per litre, with the final decision likely to be taken after the elections to four Legislative Council seats, official sources said.

The Karnataka Milk Federation (KMF) has sought a hike of Rs 10 per litre.

The Cabinet's decision comes amid the ongoing drought in the state, with ministers saying the proposed increase would help improve returns for dairy farmers.

The Model Code of Conduct is currently in force for the Legislative Council elections from two graduates' and two teachers' constituencies. Polling is scheduled for October 23, while counting and declaration of results will take place on October 27.

There was no official briefing after the Cabinet meeting due to the MCC.

However, multiple ministers said the Cabinet had favoured the price hike and authorised Chief Minister D K Shivakumar to take the final call in view of the MCC.

The Cabinet is also learnt to have rejected two proposals seeking denotification of land acquired by the Karnataka Industrial Areas Development Board (KIADB).

One proposal sought denotification of 362.21 acres acquired for the Suvarna Karnataka Development Corridor in Shivamogga taluk of Shivamogga district, while the other pertained to 1 acre and 39 guntas acquired by KIADB in Harohalli taluk of Bengaluru South district.

The Cabinet is also said to have approved a Rs 704-crore scheme for digitalisation of the judiciary.

A minister said the proposal included establishment of a data centre for the judiciary and a disaster rehabilitation centre through the Karnataka State Data Centre (KSDC), besides other digitalisation initiatives.

The Cabinet is also learnt to have approved a proposal to procure medicines for public health hospitals at a cost of Rs 1,000 crore.

The Cabinet also discussed division of the Bengaluru City Police Commissionerate into five police commissionerate units under the overall supervision of the Commissioner of Police.
