Karwar: The Sunday market, which used to take place every week, near Mahatma Gandhi Road, was shifted to KEB office, in Karwar, on Sunday. However, the traders, particularly farmers and traders, who had come from far away places to sell their goods, had difficult time due to lack of basic facilities in the new market place.
CMC officials had allowed vendors to sell their goods from Savita Circle to KEB Office. Due to utter chaos, by the time traders settled down to sell their goods, it was 11:30 am.
As market began late, number of people arriving increased suddenly, leaving no space for movement of goods and people. Senior citizens and women, in particular, had difficult time to purchase essential commodities.
Farmers and traders who had vegetables and fruits from far off places had difficulty in unloading their goods. Due to narrow road filled with people and vendors, goods vehicles had no space to move and unload commodities.
The vendors had no protection from sun, and had harrowing time. A farmer from a village near Hanagal, in Haveri district, expressed anger against CMC's unscientific decision to shift the market. "I had brought vegetables and fruits grown by me on my land in a rented vehicle. Due to shifting of market, I suffered loss, for which district administration is solely responsible," he said.
Traffic police had difficult time controlling movement of vehicle. The police had asked two-wheeler drivers to park their vehicles on Janata Bazar Road, Kodibag Road, But this hindered movement of other vehicles.
