Bhatkal: A lorry ran amok and rammed four motorcycles and a police patrol jeep near Bhatkal in Udupi district on Thursday, killing a 45-year-old man.
The deceased was identified as Nagendra Mahale, a resident of Shirur.
The accident occurred near Green Valley School in Shirur, about 15 km from Bhatkal, while an accident-hit goods lorry was being removed from a slope. Traffic had been stopped and barricades placed on the road to facilitate the operation.
Mahale and several others were standing by the roadside watching the removal of the accident-hit lorry with the help of a JCB when another lorry, loaded with rubber and travelling from Kerala towards Maharashtra, lost control while descending the slope.
The lorry first rammed four motorcycles parked on the roadside and then collided with the police patrol jeep. Mahale, who was standing near the motorcycles, was caught in the path of the lorry and died on the spot.
A case has been registered at Byndoor Police Station and further investigation is underway.
