Bhatkal: A newly built sterile and hygienic fish market was opened in Bhatkal on Thursday, 22nd November, inaugurated by Uttar Kannada district incharge Minister RV Deshpande. This new fish market is located near Sunday Bazaar (Santa Markat) in the town.
Speaking after the inauguration, Minister Deshpande congratulated Bhatkal for getting one of the biggest fish markets in the district. Announcing that the market's administration was being handed to the local municipality, he urged the authorities to ensure that the market is kept spot clean and tidy, saying that cleanliness would attract more visitors to and increase business."
On this occasion, the foundation stone for a hostel for minority students was also laid.
Bhatkal MLA Sunil Naik presided over the function while assistant commissioner Sajid Mulla, Ex MLA Mankal Vaidya, Bhatkal TMC president Sadiq Matta, vice president KM Ashfaque, Ex Coastal development authority chairman Nivedith Alwa among many others were present on the stage.
Fish is an important part of Bhatkali cuisine and locals include it in their daily diet. The new market would provide better business opportunities for fish sellers who had to sell fishes on the roadsides till now.
