Dharwad: The Indian Institute of Technology, Dharwad (IIT-D), is all set to be dedicated to the nation on July 31 as all the major civil works at its transit campus have been completed.

The ground floor of the Water and Land Management Institute (Walmi) on the northern outskirts of Dharwad has been handed over to the IIT-D management after the setting up of LAN connections and other works were finished.

The campus was earlier under the control of the district administration. Prime Minister Narendra Modi may inaugurate the IIT-D, though the PMO is yet to confirm his itinerary.

Classes will begin at the IIT-D on August 1 with a total of 120 students enrolled in first-year BTech courses in Computer Science, Mechanical and Electronics engineering this academic year.

The district administration has set up three laboratories and classrooms for chemistry, physics and computer science as requisitioned by the IIT-Bombay which is the mentor of the new institute. The IIT-Bombay is said to have expressed satisfaction over the facilities.

Walmi has 136 acres of land and there is a lot of scope for value-added services.

The 182 quarters would be transformed into student hostels. Special quarters will be established for the IIT faculty.
