New Delhi: Chief Justice of India, D Y Chandrachud, made a historic announcement on Thursday, revealing that the Supreme Court's data is now accessible on the National Judicial Data Grid (NJDG), a system that tracks pending and resolved cases in various courts across the country.

As the court session commenced, he began by stating that he had an important announcement to make, heralding the day as a momentous occasion. He emphasized that the apex court's data would now be uploaded to the NJDG in real-time, describing it as a unique and informative platform jointly developed by the National Informatics Centre (NIC) and the Supreme Court's in-house team.

The Chief Justice explained that with a simple click, users could access real-time information about case pendency and disposal, categorized by year. This includes data on the total pendency of registered and unregistered cases, as well as the number of cases decided by quorum. The data upload onto the NJDG was seen as a crucial step toward enhancing transparency and accountability in the judicial domain.

Chief Justice Chandrachud further revealed that there were currently 583 cases pending before three-judge benches, and he committed to promptly establishing benches to address these cases. According to the data, there were 288 cases pending before five-judge benches, 21 cases before seven-judge benches, and 135 cases before nine-judge benches.

As per the data, the Supreme Court saw 37,777 cases instituted in the current year, with 36,164 cases already disposed of. In the previous month, 5,412 cases were instituted, and 5,033 cases were disposed of. This resulted in a total pendency of 64,854 registered cases and 15,490 unregistered cases.

"With the Supreme Court of India integrating into the National Judicial Data Grid (NJDG) portal, the flagship project of the e-Courts initiative completes its full circle. This achievement is recognized as a significant innovation under the Ease of Doing Business initiative of the Government of India," stated a press release from the Supreme Court.

The NJDG portal serves as a comprehensive national repository of data concerning cases initiated, pending, and resolved by courts across the length and breadth of the country.

In a message, Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised the move, stating, "A commendable step by the Supreme Court and Chief Justice DY Chandrachud Ji. The utilization of technology in this manner will further enhance transparency and bolster our country's justice delivery system."
