Bengaluru: Since the beginning of October, heavy rainfall across Karnataka has led to the deaths of 25 individuals and damaged crops spanning 1.05 lakh hectares, according to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. Following a recent review meeting with senior officials, including Deputy Commissioners (DCs), the CM shared updates on the damage and relief efforts.

DCs have been instructed to complete a comprehensive survey of crop damage within the week and submit findings to the state government. The initial report estimates that 74,994 hectares of agricultural crops and 30,941 hectares of horticultural crops have been affected. In cases of fatalities or housing damage, compensation will be provided within 48 hours.

From October 1 to 25, Karnataka received 181mm of rainfall—58mm above the typical 114mm for this period. This marks the third-highest rainfall recorded in October over the last century. Between June and September, Karnataka received 978mm of rain, surpassing the usual average of 852mm.

The state anticipates above-average rainfall from October to December. Meanwhile, major reservoirs are nearly at full capacity, holding 871.25 tmcft out of a total 895.81 tcmft. Last year, the same period saw only 505.81 tmcft.

To ensure year-round water availability, the government has directed the Irrigation Department to supply drinking water and support agriculture. Funds have also been allocated for relief efforts, with Rs 551 crore available to DCs and Rs 115.71 crore with tahsildars. Additionally, DCs have been tasked with clearing lake encroachments, as rural infrastructure, including 12,553 km of roads and 1,106 small bridges, has been impacted by the rainfall.
