Rising Number of Dalit Atrocity Cases in DK District, Compensation Provided

Mangaluru: In June of this year, a total of 43 cases of atrocities against Dalits were registered in Dakshina Kannada (DK) district. The Deputy Director of the Social Welfare department, Malathi, revealed that compensation amounting to Rs 26.87 lakh has been disbursed in 39 of these cases. Speaking at the District Vigilance and Monitoring Committee meeting, Malathi shared that among the 43 cases, 18 were registered within the jurisdiction of the Mangaluru Police Commissionerate, with Rs 13.5 lakh given in compensation for 17 cases. The meeting was chaired by DK Deputy Commissioner Mullai Muhilan.

Further details include the disbursement of compensation in various taluks. In Bantwal taluk, where seven cases were filed, Rs 6.12 lakh compensation was provided for five cases. In Belthangady, a total of nine cases received Rs 3.75 lakh in compensation. Puttur witnessed the disbursement of Rs 2.50 lakh for six out of the seven cases filed. Additionally, two cases in Sullia were compensated with Rs one lakh.

DC Muhilan stressed the importance of promptly filing charge sheets in cases of atrocity. No atrocity case should be treated lightly, and officials were urged to continue monitoring the cases even after the compensation has been disbursed.
