Udupi: The family of a 46-year-old male victim of a road accident has generously donated his organs after doctors pronounced him brain dead in Udupi

Joe Victor Lewis, hailing from Kemmannu in Udupi city, has posthumously provided a lifeline to others in dire need of organ transplants, as stated by Avinash Shetty, Medical Superintendent at Kasturba Hospital, Manipal.

Dr. Shetty explained in a statement that Lewis was admitted to the hospital after the accident, but despite extensive medical efforts, his condition worsened rapidly. Following the legal protocol outlined in the Transplantation of Human Organ Act 1994, a panel of expert doctors officially declared him brain dead twice. Subsequently, Lewis's family made the compassionate decision to donate his viable organs.

Adhering to the procedures set forth by Jeevasarthakathe, the State Organ and Tissue Transplantation Organisation (SOTTO) in Bengaluru, Lewis's liver was transported to Kasturba Medical College Hospital, Ambedkar Circle in Mangaluru on Thursday, April 11th. One kidney was allocated to Yenepoya Hospital in Mangaluru, while the other was destined for Indiana Hospital in Mangaluru. Additionally, Kasturba Hospital in Manipal retained Lewis's corneas and skin for transplantation among registered patients awaiting suitable matches, Dr. Shetty confirmed.

Dr. Shetty emphasized that the act of organ donation represents a commendable effort to save lives.
