Mangaluru: As heavy rain continues to pummel various parts of Dakshina Kannada district, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert. In response, the Deputy Commissioners in DK and Udupi have announced the closure of schools and PU colleges for the day.

Over the past 24 hours, several areas in the district have experienced intense rainfall. Yadthare in Kundapura recorded a staggering 207.5 mm of rainfall, followed closely by Renjala with 205 mm. Shirur and Uppunda were not far behind, receiving 196 mm and 182 mm of rainfall, respectively. Belthangady's Marodi witnessed 202 mm of rain, while Balanja and Pajir received 196 mm and 188 mm respectively.

The continuous downpour has led to a significant rise in the water levels of rivers Nethravathi, Kumaradhara, and Phalguni, owing to the substantial showers in their catchment areas. To manage the surging water levels, all four gates of the Thumbe vented dam, which supplies water to Mangaluru city, have been opened.

In anticipation of further rainfall, the IMD has issued an orange alert for Dakshina Kannada on both July 6 and 7, urging residents to remain cautious and take necessary precautions.
