Udupi: Deputy Commissioner Vidyakumari stressed the importance of tackling maternal and infant mortality through increased awareness of pre-natal and post-natal care and a balanced diet. 

Speaking at a review meeting, she emphasized the distribution of "thaayi cards" to pregnant women and early detection of complications, urging prompt referral for necessary treatment. The district reported 51 newborn deaths between July and December 2023, prompting a call for preventive measures.

From April to December, there were 9,169 deliveries, with 3,902 being normal and 5,267 C-section deliveries. Vidyakumari urged a focus on normal deliveries over C-sections. On COVID-19, 1,954 tests were conducted with only two positive cases. She also highlighted the national goal to eradicate tuberculosis by 2025, reporting 32,576 screenings in the district, with 1,578 testing positive. Vidyakumari sternly warned against prenatal gender detection, labeling it a crime, with a commitment to take appropriate action.

Deputy Commissioner's directives underscore the need for comprehensive healthcare strategies, timely interventions, and a strong emphasis on preventive measures to address maternal and infant mortality.
