SIO urges Centre to clear doubts on NRC

Mangaluru: Students’ Islamic Organizsation of India (SIO) National Secretary Labid Shafi urged the Central government to sort out the ambiguity related to the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Assam.

He was addressing reporters after releasing the ‘In a State of Doubt’ book, published by SIO and said that the Central government has been ‘creating’ refugees.

The 40.07 lakh people who are dwelling in the refugee camps in Assam are kept out of the final draft NRC. They are suffering from fear, he added.

Despite the court directing the government to consider the people who started living in Assam even before March 24, 1971, as Indian Citizens, the government had identified them as foreigners.

Among the 40.07 lakh people, 25 lakh Bengali Muslims and 15 lakh Bengali Hindus are estimated to have lost their citizenship. About 2.48 lakh people are ‘D’ voters. One month time has been given for the investigation of the documents, which is impractical, he added.

Labid Shafi further pointed out that there are complaints about the credibility and non-transparency in the functioning of Foreigners’ Tribunal.

He meanwhile urged that these people in Assam should be considered Indian citizens and development programmes for them must be implemented after listening to their vows.
