Bhatkal: Teachers have a greater responsibility today as they have to discipline and guide students without resorting to corporal punishment, retired Vijaya Bank manager Madhukeshwar Naik said.

Speaking after inaugurating a Guruvandana programme at Sri Guru Vidyadhiraj The New English Pre-University College here, Naik recalled that students in his generation were often subjected to physical punishment by teachers.

“Despite being punished, we were able to grow into responsible individuals recognised by society. Today, teachers have to correct and guide students without using such methods, making their responsibility even greater,” he said.

The programme was organised to honour teachers and anganwadi workers who are parents of students studying at the college.

Eight teachers and anganwadi workers from educational institutions in Bhatkal, Hosanagara and Shiruru were felicitated on the occasion.

Principal Dr Virendra V Shanbhag presided over the programme. Krishna S Gonda, Bhaskar Bailagadde, Thimmamma Gowda and Mohan Nagappa Naik spoke on behalf of the honourees.

Lecturer Jayanth Naik welcomed the gathering, while Shivananda Bhat proposed the vote of thanks. Sindhu Kharvi, Gayathri Shetty and Sankalpa compered the programme.
