Karwar: The price of tomatoes has gone up in Karwar market, while this has brought smiles on faces of farmers, but consumers are upset.

Last Sunday, per Kg of tomato was sold for Rs 50. But this week, this has gone upto Rs 70/Kg.

Vegetables and fruits to Karwar market come from Haveri, Bagalkot and Dharwad districts. But this time, the influx of tomatoes is less and the price has also become dearer.

This discouraged the comman man from buying it. As a result, use of tomatoes in various dishes has become limited in hotels and at houses.

The main reason for this price rise is scarcity of water.”There is poor monsoon in North Karnataka till now. This has brought down the yield of tomato" said a trader.

"Only tomato grown in borewell water is coming to the market. Wholesalers sold it for Rs 60 per Kg and in retail, it is being sold at Rs 70 per Kg to get atleast some profit” said a retailer.

Padma, a localite, said that even last year, the price of tomato had gone up to nearly Rs 100 per kg, in this period. Not just tomato, even other vegetables saw slight rise in prices on Sunday.

Beans was sold for Rs 60 per kg, Brinjal for Rs 60 per kg, Capsicum for Rs 80 per kg, Ladies finger for Rs 40 per kg. However, there was no much difference in prices of green leafy vegetable.
