Imphal: Two people, including a woman, were killed and four others injured in an attack by heavily armed militants at Koutruk in Imphal West district, Manipur, on Sunday afternoon.

The incident occurred around 2 p.m. near the border between Imphal West and Kangpokpi districts, when shots were fired from nearby hills. Imphal West is predominantly Meitei, while Kangpokpi has a Kuki majority.

One of the deceased has been identified as 33-year-old Surbala Devi from Phayeng Umang Leikai. She was rushed to the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) Hospital in Imphal, where she was declared dead on arrival. Her 13-year-old daughter, Ng Rojiya, sustained injuries to her right hand and is currently receiving treatment at the same hospital.

Among the injured was a 30-year-old police officer, N Robert, from Awang Khunou Maning Leikai. Two other victims, 26-year-old Inao Takhellambam and 19-year-old Thadoi Heigrujam, were taken to Raj Medicity hospital. Inao suffered injuries to the lower abdomen, while Thadoi was wounded in the right shoulder.

Following the attack, the local administration imposed a curfew in Imphal West district. The Manipur government condemned the violence and promised stern action against those responsible.

"The state government has learned about the unfortunate incident of an attack on unarmed Koutruk villagers using drones, bombs, and sophisticated weapons, reportedly by Kuki militants, resulting in the death of two persons, including a woman, and injuries to many," read a press release from the Manipur Home Ministry.

According to sources, a house was damaged when a bomb was dropped using a drone, though no one was injured. The attack took place near a Border Security Force (BSF) station, and a police commando in the reinforcement team was hit by a splinter from a drone-dropped bomb.
