Karwar: The State government has declared Uttara Kannada district as flood-affected this year. But in reality, the district has witnessed 8% deficit monsoon rainfall.
The district normally receives rainfall (monsoon rain) of 2,658 mm between June and September 30 every year. But this year, it has received 2,457 mm.
Due to heavy rain in June and July, various taluks of the district witnessed floods, crop loss and loss to animals.
Relief:
Based on this damage and loss due to rain, the government
declared the district as flood-affected. It has also appealed the Union government to provide compensation to the flood-hit areas under the National Disaster Relief Fund (NDRF).
Poor rainfall:
Siddapur received the least rainfall this year when compared to the eleven taluks of the district.
Siddapur taluk normally receives 3,807 mm rain but this year, it has received 2,531 mm.
This apart, Joida taluk witnessed 35% deficit rainfall, Sirsi taluk 26% deficit, Karwar taluk 19%. Ankola taluk 8% and Honnavar taluk 6% deficit rainfall.
Excess rainfall:
This time, Haliyal taluk received excess rainfall. It received 41% more than the normal rainfall.
Normally, it received 917 mm rain every year but this year, it received 1,550 mm rain.
As per the statistics provided by the Agriculture Department, Yellapur taluk received 25% excess rainfall, Bhatkal 23% excess, Mundgod 21% excess and Kumta 9% more.
