Bhatkal: A family from Kerala’s Malappuram district met with a tragic road accident in Saudi Arabia after completing Umrah, resulting in the death of four members, while three daughters sustained serious injuries and are undergoing treatment at different hospitals.
According to media reports, the accident occurred around 6 pm on Saturday near Madinah, when the family from Vellila village near Manjeri was travelling by car to Jeddah after performing Umrah. Their vehicle reportedly collided with a truck on the highway, leading to the fatal mishap.
The deceased have been identified as Abdul Jaleel (52), his mother Maimuna Kakkengal (73), his wife Thasna Thodengal (40), and their 14-year-old son, Adil Jaleel. Preliminary reports said all four died on the spot due to the impact of the collision.
Abdul Jaleel’s three daughters — Aysha, Hadiya and Noorah — sustained serious injuries in the crash. They were immediately shifted to different hospitals in Saudi Arabia, where they are currently undergoing treatment. Hospital sources said the injured girls are under close medical observation, and their condition remains critical.
Media reports stated that Abdul Jaleel had been working in Jeddah for several years. His family members had recently travelled to Saudi Arabia on a tourist visa with the sole purpose of performing Umrah. The pilgrimage had been completed shortly before the accident occurred.
The exact cause of the accident is yet to be officially confirmed by Saudi authorities, and further details are awaited as legal and procedural formalities are underway.
The tragic incident has sent shockwaves through Manjeri and nearby areas in Malappuram district. Relatives, neighbours and local residents gathered at the family home in Vellila as messages of condolence poured in from across Kerala and from the Indian diaspora in the Gulf.
Efforts are reportedly underway to coordinate with Saudi authorities for the completion of legal procedures and the repatriation of the bodies. Kerala-based expatriate organisations and community groups in Saudi Arabia have also extended support to assist the bereaved family during this difficult time.
