Mangaluru: A bizarre incident was reported here at Kudrolli junction, where a group of unknown people who came in Omni car allegedly assaulted a Khateeb of one of the masjid, after which the local Muslims reportedly expressed their anger.

The victim, who was assaulted, identified as Maulana Shakeeb Saleem Umri (32), Khateeb of Kudrolli Tippu Sultan Salafi Masjid, who was assaulted when Maulana reached Kudrolli junction on his bike. A group of unknown people came to them in the car and went on assaulting.

It was reported that when Maulana was assaulted, the people nearby rushed to him for his help and tried to catch hold the assaulters. However, the assaulters managed to flee the scene. It is said that some people also followed the car, but failed. The registration number of the car was noted immediately and has been given to police. It is learnt that the car belonged to Uppinangady. Around four people were seen in the car.

The reason behind the assault on Maulana was not yet known.

The locals filed the case at Mangaluru Bunder police station and investigations are on.
