Karwar: Collective efforts essential to control drug abuse, says expert

Karwar: The rising addiction to alcohol and narcotic substances among the youth can only be controlled through the combined efforts of the government, various departments, organizations, public representatives, and society as a whole, said Dr. Shankar Rao, District Leprosy Control Officer and District Mental Health Program Officer.

Speaking at a seminar on the ill effects of alcohol and drug abuse at the Government Arts and Science College auditorium on Thursday, Dr. Rao emphasized the need for awareness and effective enforcement to curb substance abuse. The event was jointly organized by the Karnataka State Temperance Board, the Department of Information and Public Relations, the Government Arts and Science College, and NSS and NCC units.

Dr. Rao pointed out that various types of narcotic substances are easily available in society, leading many young individuals to addiction, which not only destroys their lives but also affects their families. He stressed that awareness campaigns should be implemented more effectively and that efforts to control drug abuse must begin at the household level to bring about revolutionary change.

Dr. Geetha S. Walikar, Principal of Government Arts and Science College, who presided over the event, stated that in today’s environment, youth often fall prey to negative thoughts, making them more susceptible to drug addiction. She advised young individuals to discuss their problems with their parents rather than resorting to substance abuse. She urged them to develop healthy habits, avoid drugs, and also raise awareness among their peers to prevent addiction.

Assistant Director of the Information and Public Relations Department, B. Shivakumar, in his address, welcomed the participants and noted that a significant number of young people are falling prey to alcohol and drug abuse. He called for strong determination to stay away from such addictions and lead a healthy life.

Delivering a special lecture, Dr. Suhas, a psychiatrist from the District Mental Health Program, elaborated on the harmful effects of alcohol, cannabis, cocaine, heroin, hashish, and other narcotics. He explained that substance abuse adversely impacts both physical and mental health, leading to severe damage to vital organs and triggering mental disorders like depression. However, he stated that proper treatment and counseling could help individuals recover from addiction.

Dr. Suhas urged individuals to adopt a healthy lifestyle by consuming a nutritious diet, including green vegetables, and engaging in sports, arts, and cultural activities to stay away from substance abuse.

To assist individuals struggling with addiction, Dr. Suhas highlighted the ‘Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan’ helpline (14446) for drug de-addiction support. Additionally, for stress, family issues, or any other mental health concerns, individuals can seek professional counseling through the National Tele-Mental Health Program’s free helpline (14416).

As part of the event, NCC students performed a short play to showcase the dangers of alcohol and drug abuse.

Several dignitaries, including Dr. Geeta Talwar, Assistant Professor in the Hindi Department and NCC Navy Unit Sub-Lt., staff members from the Information and Public Relations Department, Health Department, college faculty, and students, were present at the event.

The vote of thanks was delivered by Basavaraj Dalawai, an English professor and NSS unit officer, while student Srinidhi anchored the program.
