Odisha: The story of a tribal man carrying his wife’s dead body for over 10 kilometers due to absence of transport, has not yet subsided the discussion when the news of yet another horrific incident has hit the headlines. Four daughters from the same poverty stricken Odisha’s Kalahandi were forced to carry the dead body of their mother on a woven cot when the people in the neighborhood refused to help them with the last rites of their mother. Not only this, but these helpless daughter had no option other than dismantling their house roof for the firewood needed for their mother’s funeral pyre.
It is reported that Kanak Satpathy, a 75-year-old woman, died after prolonged illness on Friday night. The daughters begged everybody to help them perform the last rites of their mother, but sadly not a single person came forward to help the distressed women.
After hours of waiting with no help and no wood for the funeral pyre, the daughters dismantled the roof of their house, lay their mother on a woven cot and carried her dead body to cremation ground in the Dokripada village of the district’s Golamunda block on Saturday.
As per the information, two among the four daughters are widowed, while the other two are deserted by their husbands. The women are forced to beg for their livelihood.
Previously, Dana Majhi on August 24 was forced to carry his wife’s body on his own shoulder and walk for 10 km after the hospital authorities refused to provide any assistance to transport the body.
