Bhatkal: In August last year, four people died in a landslide incident that occurred in Muttalli village of the taluka. Although the incident had faded from public memory, a recent event has reignited fear and concern throughout the entire village. On Wednesday evening, a large rock tumbled down from the top of the hill, causing widespread alarm.
Reports indicate that the rock fell from a height of approximately 500 meters, obliterating all the trees and plants in its path as they crumbled to the ground. However, it stopped short of reaching the ground.
Witnesses, including residents and farmers working in nearby fields, rushed to observe the commotion caused by the thunderous sound of the rock sliding down. To their relief, the rock halted at a considerable distance from Belur main road. As onlookers directed their gaze toward the hill, they were astonished to witness a newly formed forest path resulting from the landslide.
Speculation suggests that the incident in Belurmane, Konar, may be attributed to soil erosion. Furthermore, it was discovered that several other hilly stones in close proximity to the origin of the fallen rock were also in the process of slipping.
Given the continuous rainfall, there is a significant likelihood of soil collapse and subsequent rock slides. This incident in Konar serves as evidence that deforestation has severe consequences on nature. Consequently, residents in the lower regions of the hill are demanding immediate removal of the rocks that are prone to sliding from the hilltop.
Local sources indicate that there are 2-3 houses in the lower area near the road, which is frequently used by pedestrians and commuters on Belur Road.
Circle Police Inspector Chandan, accompanied by his team from Bhatkal Rural Police Station, has arrived at the scene to conduct an inspection.
