Karwar: As many as 55 dengue cases have been reported from Karwar district in recent days. Of them, 29 cases are from Karwar city. Measures taken by the City Corporation and Health Department have failed to prevent spread of dengue. If the situation continues, it may become an epidemic, sources said.
Speaking to reporters, district health officer Ashok Kumar said: “Till now, 55 dengue cases have been detected in the district. We have taken various measures to prevent dengue.”
“The department has been organizing awareness campaigns and our staff are visiting areas to create awareness on cleanliness among citizens. In addition to that, our staff are checking larva breeding in the city, based on which we are concentrating on those areas,” he added.
The ongoing fogging drive has failed to control mosquitoes, sources said. Jagadish Naik, a retired teacher, said the corporation has been doing something, but it did not yield any result.
Health Department official Ramesh Rao said: “This year, we have got 258 suspected dengue cases in the district. We have checked blood samples of 158 patients, of that, 55 samples were tested positive. To prevent spread of dengue, we are conducting awareness programmes and workshops.
Free blood checkup is available at district laboratory for suspected dengue patients. A dengue ward has been started at civil hospital.”
