Ranchi: In another case of police brutality, a Muslim youth was beaten up by police officials in the Narayanpura Police station, Jamtara for posting provocative content on WhatsApp. The youth reportedly died on Sunday morning at Ranchi Institute of Medical Science, Ranchi without responding to any medical treatments given to him.
It is reported that 22-year-old Minhaj Ansari, a resident of Dighari village of Jamatra was arrested by the police along with two others for posting some objectionable content on a WhatsApp group. Police eventually released the other two, whereas Minhaj was continued to detain. The police alleged that the content posted by the trio was something which hurt religious sentiments.
The two who were released had visible signs of torture on their bodies. They informed the family of Minhaj that Minhaj was badly beaten up and tortured by the police, which had resulted in loss of his eyesight. When the family reached the station, they were told that Minhaj was ill and was admitted to a hospital.
When the family reached the hospital they were told that he was referred to the government hospital in Jamtara, about 30 kms from Narayanpura. Again on October 5th, he was taken to Dhanbad for treatment.
When the suffering family reached Dhanbad to see Minhaj on Oct 6th, the Narayanpura SHO Harish Pathak, the man allegedly at the centre of this case, denied them a chance to meet Minhaj. Eventually this led to petty fight between the family and the police. The family alleged that the fight was nothing as compared to how it was being portrayed in some media.
The reports said that the condition of Mihaj kept on deteriorating but the family members were not allowed to meet him. On October 7, he was again referred to Ranchi, and only then did his family get a chance to meet him.
His bother Ilyas said that when they went to see Minhaj his eyes were wide open, but he was unable to see them. “His spine had been broken, and so were his legs. He could not move, and there was no response when his family saw him”. On 9th of Oct, the victim was pronounced dead.
The police had made arrangements to ensure that the locals do not protest when his body arrived at his village. A dozen of police vehicles had followed his corpse. The family of deceased revealed that the police had warned them against any kind of protest.
“The police told us if there was any form of protest on our part, they would declare this as a Hindu-Muslim riot and that none of us would be spared,” says Ilyas.
The police wanted the body to be buried in the night, but the locals insisted that it should be done in the morning, informed one of the locals.
On Monday morning, the local DSP and the SP visited Dighari and assured the grieving family that action would be taken against the police. They also announced a compensation of Rs 2 lakh for the deceased’s family. “Minhaj had a one-year-old daughter. What use is Rs 2 lakh, when you have snatched away the father of a toddler?” asked Ilyas.
The family said that the accused officer Harish Pathak has been suspended, but he added that they wanted a case against the accused people. He said that like all the similar cases justice is least expected but they would try that proper legal procedure is followed.
